Why study a language on the internet?
As the global economy becomes more and more integrated and trade barriers get knocked down it is becoming more and more important to be able to speak a foreign language. Many people are starting to find that they need to be able to speak a second and even a third language in order to get ahead in their careers. Unfortunately a lot of these people are also finding it difficult to find the time to take language lessons. Fortunately the internet has made it possible to learn a new language online. This has provided many people with the opportunity to learn how to speak an additional language and get ahead at work.
The biggest reason that you would want to study a language on the internet is convenience, it can be a hassle to have to schedule lessons. Most people have busy lives and even though they know that learning to speak another language is important for career advancement many of them simply don't have the time to attend lessons. Most people come to the realization that they need to upgrade their language skills once they are already in the workforce. At this point they tend to have a lot of responsibilities both professionally and personally that make it difficult to find the time to attend language classes. The internet makes it possible to learn a language at a time and place that is convenient for them.
The other advantage of learning a language online is that it can be done for a fraction of the cost of in person lessons. Most language schools are for profit businesses and the prices they charge can be steep. This is especially true if you are taking private lessons, which is how most language lessons are taught. An online lesson plan is a much, much cheaper way to learn how to speak the language.
Online language lessons also help to remove the embarrassment that often comes from trying to learn a new language. Most people feel a little foolish when they are trying to learn how to speak a new language. To avoid this they usually try to teach themselves with a book or a tape. This can work but it is hardly a good way to learn a new language. The internet offers the opportunity for interaction which doesn't exist with these other means of learning. A huge advantage is that a lot of employers will give scholarships for online courses, including Chinese classes!
Another problem that learning a language online can solve is the problem of finding somebody to teach the language. Some languages, like English have lots of instructors available, but for many languages it can be difficult to find a qualified instructor. This is not just true for obscure languages, despite a huge demand for learning Chinese there are remarkably few instructors available. The internet can solve this problem since once the lessons are created and put on the internet there is no need for an instructor.
